Lufthansa is adding the ability to pre-order meals on short- and medium-haul flights in Business Class on February 26th. Passengers will be able to select their meals before the flights the way that they currently can for long-haul flights.
The German airline announced today that there will soon be new starters, main courses, and desserts on flights within Europe and to North Africa or the Middle East. Flights just need to be more than two hours (where meals are served to Business Class passengers). The Pre-Select options will include up to nine choices. The new meals were created jointly by celebrity chef Johann Lafer, Lufthansa’s culinary teams, and its catering partner, Gate Gourmet.
Pre-orders are free of charge for all Business Class passengers and allows them to plan better to ensure a meal they will enjoy. This will also promote a more sustainable use of food as the more targeted loading reduces overstocking (and wasted food).
Business Class passengers who do not preselect meals will see a wider range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian cold dishes on routes around two hours. On routes that are three hours or longer, three hot dish choices will be offered (this was previously two selections).
Anthony’s Take: I love when airlines allows me to pre-order my meal. The use of this technology allows for guests to make sure they get what they want to eat. United finally introduced this for Polaris® flights and it’s great that I can always select what I want to eat. Lufthansa generally does a good job with catering (although I have been served some odd combos in the past). I’ll select my meal next month when I fly from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to try this out.
