Avianca S.A. is the largest airline in Colombia. It has been the flag carrier since December 1919 and is a member of Star Alliance. The carrier currently serves 15 US destinations. Avianca is the largest airline in Colombia and second largest in South America. The airline operates hubs at Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG), Cali’s Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport (CLO), Cartagena’s Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG), and Medellín’s José María Córdova International Airport (MDE).
Beginning on May 26th, Avianca will fly between Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG) and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) 4x weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays using an Airbus A320 aircraft.
Rolando Damas, Avianca’s Sales Director for North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Europe, said:
We continue to strengthen connectivity across the Americas, offering our customers more options to travel directly between the United States and Colombia.”
American Airlines currently flies this route daily using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. While Avianca has been flying between San Salvador’s El Salvador International Airport Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez (SAL) and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG) will be a second destination for the airline here.
In other route news, Avianca will also add a second route to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Nonstop flights to/from San Salvador’s El Salvador International Airport Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez (SAL) will run 3x weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays also using an Airbus A320 aircraft. This seasonal service will be available between June 3rd and August 30th.
Avianca has been adding a good number of new routes lately. In December, it announced that it was adding four new routes to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Miami International Airport (MIA) as well as beginning to fly nonstop to/from Tampa International Airport (TPA).
Anthony’s Take: I love that Avianca now offers nonstop service from Tampa and that it’s continuing to grow in other cities around the United States. I don’t have any plans to fly the airline in the near term, but the option is nice to have when travel planning.
