We’re spending the weekend in Mexico City. I love that Aeromexico resumed its nonstop route between Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Mexico City International Airport Benito Juárez (MEX) for the first time in nearly 30 years back in July 2024. The flight was convenient, quick, and a nice addition to the routes that I have access to from Tampa.
Anthony’s Take: Check-in online was a bit wonky, but I was able to get boarding passes. The flight was fairly quick and comfortable in Clase Premier (First Class). The meal was tasty and while the service was a bit lackluster, I’d fly the route again. My biggest gripe was the Wi-Fi. It was extremely slow and would stop working every few minutes.
Booking
This flight was booked as part of roundtrip award ticket booked through Delta Air Lines. I flew Tampa International Airport (TPA) to Mexico City International Airport Benito Juárez (MEX). The tickets cost 56,000 SkyMiles plus taxes roundtrip. Cash prices were very high and I felt this was a good use of some SkyMiles.
Tampa International Airport (TPA)
My winter home airport is one of my favorites. While there is no lounge access for Aeromexico passengers here (the Admirals Club is for oneworld® and the other lounge that seems to handle international flights was not open), there is a food court and lots of space by the gates in Concourse F. Café Mis en Place used to be a Priority Pass restaurant, but that has stopped. It was pretty bad, so no real loss. We were departing from F87 until close to departure when we were moved to F88.
Boarding
Boarding was split up into separate lanes for the zones. Sky Priority and Clase Premier board with Zone 1. We boarded on time and it was pretty quick. Passengers with disabilities were called and then the agent went right into Zone 1. We were on board a few moments later.
On-Board
When we booked last month, only seats 3B and 3A were available. I prefer the bulkhead, but these were plenty spacious. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 has 16 Clase Premier, 18 AM Plus, and 132 Economy Class seats.
A blanket and pillow were waiting at each seat.
Headphones were handed out a few moments later.
Individual air vents and reading lights are overhead.
Seat Features
The seats are comfortable and offer a decent amount of room.
They recline quite far, which can be a little annoying, but I did not feel cramped even when the guy in front of me was fully reclined.
The seats also have footrests. I am too tall to use these.
A remote control is found under the center armrest.
This is extendable for easier use.
A power outlet (including a USB port) and headphone jack are also under the center armrest.
Predeparture beverages were offered with orange juice or water as the two options.
Food
We preordered our meals, but the flight attendants did not have the order sheet so they served meals front to back in the cabin. By the time they reached row 3, our only choice was the Mushroom Ravioli. These were pretty tasty and I was satisfied with the meal. I’m just not sure why you can preorder meals if that is not going to be followed. The tray also included a nice salad, a bread roll, and cheesecake for dessert.
The Mushroom Ravioli were a sizable portion.
The cheesecake also tasted good.
I was disappointed that ginger ale is not served on Aeromexico. I had an apple juice instead.
A snack basket was brought around after the meal.
Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi was not usable for half of the flight. The cost for the full flight was $8. You can also get 15 minutes free for watching an advertisement.
I’m not sure if Aeromexico’s Wi-Fi is always this bad, but I was not happy with the performance on my flight.
Entertainment
The entertainment system had movies mostly in Spanish, but a selection in English that was fine for a short flight.
Service
The service was rather lackluster. The flight attendants stayed in the galley with the curtain shut and would only come out when someone rang a call button. They were friendly, but wanted to stay tucked away as much as possible.
Lavatory
The lavatory is standard for what you can expect on a Boeing 737 MAX 8.
It was not kept very tidy and there was paper everywhere pretty early into the flight.
Overall Impression:
We departed and arrived on time, the service was mediocre, and the food was pretty good. The seat was comfortable, but the Wi-Fi was bad. The convenience of being able to get to Mexico City nonstop makes this flight a winner above all else.
