I noticed that the Marriott Bonvoy® app was displaying the wrong number of guests on a stay last week and it popped up again for an upcoming stay. The app seems to be adding guests and in some cases in excess. The hotels appear to see the correct number of guests, but if they don’t then this has implications for elite benefits and charges for additional occupants.

JW Marriott Water Street Booking

I have a one-night staycation (booked with points) planned at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street. When I booked the reservation, I selected two guests and my booking confirmation shows that there are two guests set for the room.

The Marriott Bonvoy® app is now showing that I have it set for six guests. I’m not planning on housing six people in this Deluxe Guest room (nor would I be allowed to based on occupancy restrictions).

This is clearly an odd glitch with the Marriott Bonvoy® app and it seems like it has been going on for some time. A FlyerTalk thread from February 2023 discusses this odd addition of guests to reservations. Commenters on this post think it might have to do with adding a name to the reservation. I have not done that, so I’m not sure what caused it on this reservation.

Anthony’s Take: This seems to be a glitch, but one that could negatively impact elite members looking for upgrades or any guests being charged for extra phantom people in the room. Have you ever encountered this bug?
