Earlier today, I wrote that Spirit Airlines is entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Spirit’s CEO sent a message to reassure passengers that their tickets, points, and overall experience is not going to change. The airline is the first major one in the United States to file for bankruptcy in the past 13 years. Digging further into Spirit’s plans, there are actually some potential enhancements that could come out of this situation that will make flying Spirit even better in the future.

Service Changes and In-Seat Power

I love Spirit’s Big Front Seats™, but the one thing that they are missing is in-seat power. No seats on Spirit planes have power outlets and Spirit is now potentially adding these along with other interior changes to overhead bins and lighting. Some level of free Wi-Fi is also being floated as an idea for all passengers. Spirit is also considering offering water and snacks on a complimentary basis to all passengers (this is in addition to what premium passengers receive).

Codeshares, Joint Ventures, and Potential Alliances

Spirit currently operates independently of any other airline. It does not codeshare with any other carriers, does not have any joint ventures, and is not part of any alliance. Spirit is exploring all of these options.

Network Realignment

Spirit has been cancelling unprofitable and unpopular routes for some time. It’s continuing to reallocate aircraft and will start with its Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) hub before focusing on other cities. Spirit will continue to retreat in cities where it is not seeing the demand and use those resources on routes that customers want.

Anthony’s Take: These are all just being sketched out, but any of these changes would be good for Spirit passengers. I’ll report back once more details are finalized in the future.

None of these will make them any money. Giving away wifi seems insane, since so many people people seem to pay for it on Spirit flights.
