An LSG Sky Chefs catering truck plowed into the area underneath the tail of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-700 aircraft at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The driver appears to have been distracted and reportedly did not reduce speed upon impact.
The video above shows the truck get close to the aft of the plane and then collide just below the tail and horizontal stabilizer. No additional details have been released around what caused the accident, if the employee was terminated, and how much damage the aircraft sustained.
This is not the first time that this has happened in recent memory. In April, a Gate Gourmet vehicle struck a Virgin Atlantic A350-1000’s engine and caused flight VS26 scheduled to operate between New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to cancel.
Simple Flying reports that more than 26% of aircraft damage from 2016 to 2022 resulted from contact with ground support equipment (GSE). Most of these incidents were collisions from towing or pushing back (according to Aviation Pros) and repairs can start at $50,000 and up.
Anthony’s Take: This will be a costly mistake for the airline and could see the driver terminated. Luckily, no one was injured.
