Airline Travel Waivers Issued As Tropical Storm Helene Nears the Gulf of Mexico

Airlines are bracing for some messy weather over the next few days as cities in parts of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, the Caribbean, and Mexico brace for Tropical Storm Helene. Waivers have been issued by all of the airlines serving these areas and if you don’t need to travel there this week, I would not. We’re in Chicago, but are hoping for the best for our place in Tampa. Stay safe and stay up to date with the latest information if you are traveling.

Alaska Airlines

Passengers on Alaska Airlines flights scheduled between September 25th and September 27th may rebook or cancel their flights for free if they’re booked into or out of the following airports:

  • Cancún International Airport (CUN)
  • Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)

Changed travel must occur between September 25th and September 30th.

American Airlines

Passengers on flights scheduled to fly to or from the following airports through September 27th may rebook or cancel for free. These include:

  • Cancún International Airport (CUN)
  • Cozumel International Airport (CZM)
  • Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB)
  • Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS)
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)

Passengers scheduled to fly between September 25th and September 27th may cancel for credit or rebook for free if they’re flying to/from these airports:

  • Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)

If passengers are rebooking their flight, the new travel dates must be within 14 days of their original departure date for no additional charges. They can also cancel their flight for redeemable flight credit.

Tickets must be reissued by the end of the day on October 4th, completed no later than October 4th, and within the same fare, class to avoid differences in fare.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines is offering to rebook without change fees, but fare differences may apply. Passengers traveling on September 26th and September 27th to/from these airports are eligible:

  • Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
  • Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • Pensacola International Airport (PNS)

Travelers who choose to cancel their flights are eligible for travel credit, less any applicable cancellation or carrier fees, according to the airline.

JetBlue Airways

Passengers traveling on JetBlue on September 26th and September 27th are eligible to change or rebook their flights for free if they’re flying to/from these airports:

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Charleston International Airport (CHS)
  • Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
  • Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)

New travel must be between September 24th and October 2nd or customers can get a full refund to their original form of payment.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest passengers traveling on September 26th or September 27th may rebook travel or fly standby for free within 14 days of their original travel dates if they’re flying to/from these airports:

  • Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida (VPS)
  • Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
  • Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • Panama City’s Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP)

  • Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)

Travel must be between the same cities as originally scheduled. Customers who opt not to travel can request a refund for the unused portion of their ticket or save the credit for a future flight.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines passengers traveling to/from the list of cities below between September 25th and September 27th are eligible to rebook without penalty if they fly by October 2nd.

  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • Pensacola International Airport (PNS)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)

Fare differences will apply for travel after October 2nd.

United Airlines

Travelers with United flights scheduled to/from the following airports before September 27th may rebook for free. These include:

United will waive the change fees and fare differences for travel completed by October 4th within the same fare class and between the same cities as originally booked.

Anthony’s Take: It looks like this storm has the potential to cause lots of destruction and upend travel plans. Move your flights if you plan to travel and stay safe.
