An easyJet passenger’s holiday likely didn’t go as planned when his drunken antics got him arrested and now sentenced to jail time. The Scottish man was detained after being disruptive and abusive with the crew in addition to a list of other inappropriate behaviors.

The 34-year-old man was caught smoking in the lavatory, damaged a soap dispenser, and then relieved himself in front of other passengers. The man, known as Brian Watt, also refused to remain seated and became increasingly agitated with the crew (hurling insults and shouting at them) on the flight from Glasgow Airport (GLA) to Tenerife South Airport (TFS). This caused the captain to divert to Bristol Airport (BRS).

The BBC reports that in court, he admitted to being drunk on the aircraft, criminal damage, failing to obey the lawful commands of the pilot, and using threatening, abusive or insulting words towards crew. The passenger was sentenced last month at North Somerset Magistrates’ Court to eight months in jail.

Sergeant Rachael Hodges said:

Brian Watt’s threatening and criminal behavior was disgraceful and forced the flight to Tenerife to be diverted. He caused significant disruption to passengers onboard, as well as the airline and crew. He now has a criminal record and a significant prison sentence as a result, and it hopefully is a reminder to people flying away this summer of the need to behave when traveling.”

Last week, I wrote about a Ryanair flight that we took between Manchester Airport (MAN) and Corfu International Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias” (CFU). There were passengers seated behind us that got increasingly drunk and were shouting (even saying that the plane was going to crash). The crew did nothing and it made for a rather painful 3.5-hour flight.

Anthony’s Take: I don’t understand how it’s fun to get so drunk that you cause an airplane to divert. People need to learn to behave in public and acting out while in flight is not going to end well.
