Spirit Airlines has been making a lot of news lately with changes to its route network. Earlier today, I covered the low-cost carrier hopes to secure one of the five slots at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) that are not perimeter bound. Last week, I wrote about how it cut 17 routes from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). I reported at the time that there were four international routes on the chopping block. What I did not realize at the time was that these were the only remaining international routes from this airport.
On August 13th, Spirit will shift flying to seasonal (although a schedule has not been released) for the following destinations:
- Cancún International Airport (CUN)
- Comayagua International Airport (XPL)
- Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA)
- San Pedro Sulas’ Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP)
Spirit provided The Points Guy with a statement. Part of it reads:
In response to reduced demand in Latin American markets, we are transitioning our international service from IAH to operate seasonally.”
Anthony’s Take: Spirit continues to make moves with its route network and it’s exciting to see all of the changes. We’ll see if these Latin American routes return and what else Spirit has planned in the near future.
