ZIPAIR is a Japanese low-cost airline (and subsidiary of Japan Airlines) based out of Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT). It currently flies to four destinations in the US including Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and San José Mineta International Airport (SJC). Today, ZIPAIR announced that it’s adding Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to its route network.

ZIPAIR Houston

The new flights between Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) will run 4x weekly on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays using Boeing 787-8 aircraft. These are configured with 18 flat-bed seats (like you would find in Business Class) and 292 Economy Class seats.

ZIPAIR has a fleet of eight Boeing 787-8 aircraft. It started operations in 2018 and Houston will be the carrier’s longest route when it launches. I would try ZIPAIR’s lie-flat offering. There is no seatback entertainment, but free Wi-Fi is provided. That’s enough to keep me occupied (even on a 14-hour flight). Everything else on ZIPAIR is provided a la carte (including food, drinks, and pillows).

Anthony’s Take: ZIPAIR is continuing to add destinations in the United States. It’s interesting to see it choose Houston next given that both ANA and United Airlines fly there and offer lots of options to get to Japan. We’ll see what’s next for this low-cost carrier and if they make it any further east in the United States.

I would fly Zipair in a second. All I really care about is the seat. With internet, I’ll entertain myself. Wish they would open a NYC route.
