Air India flight AI 171 took off for London Gatwick Airport (LGW) from Ahmedabad Airport (AMD) and seconds later had a fatal crash. The tragic accident took the lives of 241 of the 242 passengers and crew on the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. This is the first-ever crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and an investigation is underway into exactly what happened here.
The BBC is reporting that a British national named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh is the sole survivor. He was seated in 11A and shared with the news outlet: “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly.” He remains in critical, but stable condition at an Ahmedabad hospital. It’s a miracle that he survived since everyone else perished.
India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), Boeing, General Electric, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are all actively investigating what could have gone wrong here. The aircraft in question entered service in February 2014. It will be interesting to see what the eventual cause is determined to be. Paddle Your Own Kanoo reports that Boeing 787 aircraft are flown by 75 airlines globally. Since its introduction, more than 1,100 have entered service and are in operation.`When the Boeing 787s first started rolling out, there were several manufacturing issues that caused the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to force Boeing to halt deliveries while the cause was investigated.
Anthony’s Take: The loss of human life is heartbreaking. There are more questions than answers at this point and this will take some time to figure out what exactly happened here. My condolences to all of the families and friends that lost loved ones on this flight.
