Airlines giveth and airlines taketh away. Spirit Airlines is adding three new routes and is pausing five others in the coming months. This comes on the heels of other recent route announcements earlier this month where Spirit takes aim at American’s Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) hub and Delta’s Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) hub.
NEW: Spirit Airlines will add 3 routes:
• Dallas (DFW) to Houston (IAH)
• Reno (RNO) to Los Angeles (LAX)
• Rochester (ROC) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL)Spirit will also suspend or cancel several routes after early September:

Spirits three new routes are debuting from a mix of airports and regions. These include:
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to/from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (2x daily; starts on August 14th)
- Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to/from Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) (1x daily; starts on August 14th)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to/from Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) (1x daily; starts on August 14th)
Of particular note is the route between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). With Spirit’s entry, we’ll see as many as 45 daily flights between American Airlines, Frontier, JSX, Southwest, and United Airlines.
Route Cuts
With these additions, Spirit is also pausing some routes in September. Suspensions include:
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
- San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) to/from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
- San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) to/from Tampa International Airport (TPA)
Anthony’s Take: I was looking to take the flight from Tampa to San Juan in the future and I hope it returns. Spirit, like all airlines, is constantly evaluating passenger loads and revenue while it reallocates aircraft to try new routes or increase capacity.
