Royal Jordanian Airlines is the flag carrier of Jordan and based out of its capital city, Amman. The airline is part of oneworld® and flies to three cities in the United States and two in Canada. Yesterday, it released a rather unconventional announcement video to share that it’s going to begin flying to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
The video’s message reads: “He is back! And we’re taking you right to the middle of the action. Fly non-stop to Washington DC. Stay tuned!” The not-so-subtle Trump references make for the first time I have ever seen an airline use a political figure to advertise a new route.
While I had not seen it, Lucky at One Mile at a Time pointed out that Royal Jordanian ran a controversial ad back in February 2017 around the Muslim Ban that was instituted from seven countries with Muslim-majority populations.
Royal Jordanian Airlines currently flies to:
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
- Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)
- New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
Adding Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) will pick up a route that United had added in May 2022 and cancelled in September 2024 based on the ongoing Israeli situation. It’s interesting to me that Royal Jordanian does not fly to any of American’s hubs other than New York.
Royal Jordanian is taking delivery of new Boeing 787-9 aircraft in 2025. This will supplement the Boeing 787-8 planes in its fleet and allow for long-haul expansion. No date or frequency has been announced yet for these new flights between Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
Anthony’s Take: It’s an unconventional ad, but a smart marketing move as it has people talking about it. I’ve never been to Jordan, but have seen pictures of Petra and heard it’s incredible from friends that have been.
