Last November, I wrote about how American Airlines had made Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) a focus city with 46 destinations served from Texas’ capital city and then began cutting. The airline hacked off 21 of the 46 destinations it was flying. It then cut five more routes in July. Delta has been adding flights as American retreats and these seem to be working for the airline. Now, American is removing six more routes and will be left flying to only 10 destinations wth the majority being its hubs.

@AdrianWalz provided his weekly updates on X and the latest route report shows the following getting cut in the coming months:

  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) (ends in November)
  • Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) (ends in November)
  • Nashville International Airport (BNA) (ends in November)
  • Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA) (ends in January)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO) (ends in November)
  • Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) (ends in November)

With these latest changes, American will only serve its eight hubs, plus two leisure destinations in Mexico. These include:

  • Cancún International Airport (CUN)
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Los Cabos International Airport (SJD)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)

Austin Delta

It’s been interesting to watch American retreat as Delta has gained more of a presence at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The financials were not working for American to maintain its presence in Austin. The carrier is still trying to get its footing and chart a path forward after a rough year with its Northeast Alliance broken up and executive changes.

Anthony’s Take: Southwest still dominates Austin with 38% of the flights flown. American held second place, but I see Delta grabbing that spot this year.
