A Frontier Airlines passenger was arrested on Wednesday after he reportedly attempted to strangle a flight attendant and threatened to kill everybody else on the aircraft. The 30-year-old California man allegedly spiraled out of control on Frontier flight F9 3581 from Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
Charles Angela Salva, 30, allegedly assaulted flight attendants shortly after departure. This caused the flight to divert to Ontario International Airport (ONT) and is charged with interference with flight crew members. Shortly after takeoff, flight attendants noticed that the oxygen masks were out of the overhead compartment in the row of seats where Salva was sitting. Upon further inspection, he had his hand in the overhead compartment and had pulled out the masks. He felt claustrophobic and wanted to get off of the plane. He managed to get his hand got stuck in the process and another passenger had to assist him to get it free.
Salva allegedly began yelling obscenities at flight attendants, including:
- “We are all going to hell”
- “This airplane is going down!”
He then reportedly lunged at fellow passengers and ran towards the rear of the aircraft. Flight attendants tried to restrain him there, but he attempted to choke one of the flight attendants and left two small marks on the victim’s neck. He then pushed another flight attendant and said he was going to kill everybody, the affidavit alleges. Passengers had to help restrain Salva, who broke out of flex cuffs and was then restrained with a seatbelt. During the scuffle, Salva kicked one flight attendant in the leg around six times, which caused bruising and needed medical attention.
If convicted, Salva would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. The FBI and the Ontario Police Department are investigating this incident. Salva is currently being held in the custody of the US Marshals Service and his preliminary hearing is set for September 26th.
Anthony’s Take: Another day, another passenger going completely off the rails. It seems like this man was anxious around flying, but that in no way gives him the right to assault flight attendants and cause a diversion. Hopefully, he learns that actions have consequences.
