Back in July, I first wrote about Spirit Airlines’ new fare bundles. I’ve been a Gold member with the airline’s Free Spirit® loyalty program and was buying the BIG FRONT SEAT® each time I flew. Gold members received a free drink and snack when seated anywhere on the plane and I wondered what benefit might be added since snacks and drinks now came with these premium seats. Spirit just provided that update and Gold members now receive free Wi-Fi.
The benefit is now listed along with everything else that holders of this status level receive. It’s also included in the Go Big fare bundle, but if you’re not sitting up front this is a nice addition.
Spirit Drops Close-In Award Fee
Spirit charged a $50 fee for awards that were booked within 28 days of departure. This was excessive considering that some Spirit fares can cost less than this amount. Now, this charge is gone and members can book award flights up to the day of without any surcharge. Spirit award redemptions start at just 2,500 points.
Anthony’s Take: I’m happy to see Spirit make these changes. The airline has already dropped change and cancel fees. It’s now aligned with the major carriers (and sometimes I find it even better).
