Spirit Airlines looks like it has added several new routes to compete with Breeze Airways. These add service to both Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW).

@IshrionA revealed that schedules have been updated to include the following new flights to Tampa International Airport (TPA):

  • Charleston International Airport (CHS) (Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; starts November 15th)
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) (Daily; starts October 5th)
  • Norfolk International Airport (ORF) (dates and frequencies not yet added)
  • Richmond International Airport (RIC) (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; starts November 17th

Fort Myers

Last year, Spirit hacked away many of its flights from Fort Myers. These included:

  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Bradley International Airport (BDL)
  • Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
  • St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL)

The following new flights will launch to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW):

  • Charleston International Airport (CHS) (Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays; starts November 16th)
  • Norfolk International Airport (ORF) (Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays; starts November 16th)
  • Richmond International Airport (RIC) (dates and frequencies not yet added)

Anthony’s Take: Tampa continues to get new carriers and new routes. I’m going to have a hard time this coming winter deciding where to go and who to fly.

FWIW, Breeze is going to give you a far better in-flight experience. Schedule frequency and frequent flier status aren’t going to be a factor in this decision, so the deciders would be price, schedule and comfort. Can’t see the timing here, so I won’t comment. I’d be shocked if the fares aren’t pretty much the same.

If it were up to me, I’d go with Breeze every time. Much more comfortable and civilized than the Spirit experience. Besides, Spirit will become JetBlue soon enough. While that will improve the experience, it will also result in increased fares on routes like these.
