Air Canada opened its latest Maple Leaf Lounge at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) today. This is the Canadian carrier’s 28th lounge globally and third in the United States. In case you were wondering, New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Los Angeles International Airport are where you’ll find the other two. But, this San Francisco lounge holds a first for Air Canada. It has an outdoor terrace with direct views of the runway and two vapor fireplaces.
The new lounge is 8,168 square feet and can hold 165 guests (130 indoors and 35 on the outdoor terrace). San Francisco’s Maple Leaf Lounge pays homage to its location through its design, food, and beverages. The classic San Francisco fish stew (known as cioppino) will be served with California wines and beer from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Anchor Brewing.
Amenities include:
- A self-serve (hot and cold) buffet that showcases local flavors
- A bar serving a selection of wines (from Canada and California), local craft beer, cocktails, and espresso
- An outdoor terrace with two vapor fireplaces
- Showers with heated towel racks
- A VIP room for up to 10 people
- E-gates and biometric identification for hands-free lounge entry
- A collection of art that pays homage to California and Canada (including works from Canadian painter Shawn Evans and a mural from California artist Amos Goldbaum)
Air Canada’s Maple Leaf lounges offer admission to Air Canada Aeroplan 50K, 75K, and Super Elite members, Star Alliance Gold members, Aeroplan premium cardholders, and customers departing in business class with Air Canada or another Star Alliance member.
This new lounge presents a good opportunity for United passengers as those with Star Alliance Gold status (United Gold, Platinum, 1K®, and Global Services members) can access this lounge. It’s in Terminal 2, but that terminal is connected airside with United’s Terminal 3 for easy access.
Anthony’s Take: I’m going to check out this lounge when I’m in SFO in August. I like the Centurion Lounge there, but it’s often insanely busy. The new terrace looks great and plane spotting is always a fun activity.
