A Frontier Airlines flight bound for Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) was forced to make an emergency diversion to Miami International Airport (MIA) after an unruly passenger allegedly attempted to open an emergency exit door and gain access to the cockpit while the aircraft was in flight.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Frontier Airlines flight F9 3345 was operating from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) on Sunday evening when the crew reported a serious passenger disturbance. The Airbus aircraft diverted to Miami International Airport (MIA) (where it landed safely shortly before midnight).

Authorities say the incident involved 51-year-old Juan Reyes, who allegedly told flight attendants he wanted to get off the plane before attempting to open an exit door while the aircraft was still airborne. Flight attendants reportedly intervened and instructed Reyes to return to his seat, but investigators say he ignored repeated commands and moved toward the front of the aircraft. There, he allegedly attempted to enter the cockpit.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, crew members relocated Reyes to another seat in an effort to de-escalate the situation. An off-duty flight attendant traveling as a passenger volunteered to sit nearby and help monitor him. The situation escalated again when Reyes allegedly attempted to access the off-duty flight attendant’s belongings. When confronted, authorities say he attacked the off-duty crew member and attempted to choke him.

At that point, several passengers stepped in to assist. Among them was former professional MMA fighter Josh Longood of Chicago, who helped restrain Reyes until the aircraft landed safely in Miami. Law enforcement officers boarded the aircraft upon arrival and took Reyes into custody. He was charged with one misdemeanor count of battery, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has also launched an investigation into the incident. The FAA classified the event as a passenger disturbance and is continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the diversion.

While incidents involving passengers attempting to open aircraft doors receive significant attention, aviation experts note that modern aircraft doors cannot be opened at cruising altitude due to the pressure differential between the cabin and the outside atmosphere. Nevertheless, any attempt to interfere with an aircraft’s operation or gain access to the cockpit is treated as an extremely serious security matter.

Anthony’s Take: The flight was able to land safely in Miami and no serious injuries were reported among passengers or crew. Hopefully, this man gets the mental health assistance he needs or lands himself in jail if he is deemed okay.
