United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby released a statement this morning that outlined his vision for a potential merger with American Airlines while confirming that discussions never advanced after American declined to engage. According to Kirby, he approached American with the idea of exploring a combination that would focus on growth, customer experience, and global competitiveness rather than the cost-cutting strategies that defined past airline mergers. However, he said that without a willing partner, the proposal could not move forward.

Believe it if you want to, but Kirby emphasized that the concept was built around expanding service, improving the passenger experience, and creating a stronger US-based airline capable of competing more effectively with international carriers. He described the idea as a shift away from traditional mergers that often involve reducing capacity and jobs, instead framing it as an opportunity to build a larger, customer-focused airline. However you slice it, this is about his pent up anger from being ousted at American and wanting to continue to raise prices. There is no way this would have ever been good for passengers.

The proposed combination would have aimed to expand route networks, particularly internationally and in smaller domestic markets, while enhancing loyalty programs and onboard products. Kirby pointed to United’s recent investments in newer aircraft, upgraded cabins, onboard technology, and connectivity as a foundation that could have been scaled further.

He also argued that a combined airline could have delivered broader economic benefits, including job creation and increased demand for US-manufactured aircraft, while strengthening the country’s position in global aviation. The vision included adding more seats across the network, which he said could have improved affordability and expanded travel options (I find this hard to believe).

Despite acknowledging that such a large merger would face regulatory scrutiny, Kirby expressed confidence that a growth-focused proposal centered on customer benefits could have gained approval, even if some divestitures in certain markets were required. American Airlines publicly rejected the idea, effectively ending any possibility of further discussions for now. Even President Trump was not interested.

Anthony’s Take: While the merger proposal is reportedly no longer being pursued, Kirby stated that United will continue focusing on its existing strategy, which centers on investing in the customer experience and expanding its global network. I still think they are going to make a play to buy JetBlue and this has all been a ruse to warm the market for that acquisition.
