A SWISS Airbus A330-300 operating flight LX 147 was forced to abort takeoff at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) after an engine failure and fire scare early this morning. The aircraft was accelerating for departure on Runway 28 en route to Zurich Airport (ZRH) when an engine failed during the takeoff roll. The crew immediately rejected the takeoff and initiated emergency procedures.
During the incident, a fire broke out in the landing gear area, specifically around the wheels and brakes. Emergency slides were deployed and all passengers were evacuated directly onto the runway. Airport authorities declared a full emergency and responded with fire and rescue services.
A total of 245 passengers and crew members were on board. While all occupants were safely evacuated, six passengers sustained injuries during the evacuation process and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Some passengers who were unable to use evacuation slides were assisted using stairs brought to the aircraft.
The aircraft remained on the runway following the incident as emergency teams secured the scene. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the engine failure and subsequent fire.
Anthony’s Take: Thankfully, everyone is safe and only a few minor injuries were sustained. As usual, I see passengers with bags. Those really need to be left behind. You can replace stuff, but not people.
