Flight attendants aboard a United Airlines Boeing 787-9 carried out a rapid and highly coordinated evacuation at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Monday morning after the aircraft made an emergency landing following reports of an engine fire shortly after departure. The incident occurred around 11:20 AM this morning, just minutes after United Airlines flight UA 2127 departed Los Angeles en route to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). What was expected to be a routine transcontinental flight instead turned into an emergency when the aircraft climbed to approximately 18,000 feet before the pilots declared an emergency and requested an immediate return to the airport.
Video captured from the ground showed black smoke billowing from the left-hand engine as the aircraft returned to the airport. First responders were placed on alert ahead of the jet’s arrival. After landing safely and coming to a stop on the tarmac, mobile airstairs were initially positioned at the forward right-hand door for what appeared to be a standard deplaning procedure. Moments later, however, a full evacuation was ordered. Inflatable slides were deployed at three additional exits on the right-hand side of the aircraft (while the left-side exits remained closed due to the proximity of the smoking engine).
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Despite the alarming nature of the engine smoke, no injuries were reported during Monday’s evacuation. The rapid and disciplined response by the flight crew ensured that all passengers exited the aircraft safely under challenging circumstances.
Anthony’s Take: Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported and it looks like most passengers did not take their bags (which always drives me crazy in emergency videos as you could cost someone their life by dragging your junk).
