Back in November, I wrote about Lufthansa celebrating the 100th anniversary of the original airline founded in 1926. To honor a century of aviation heritage, the German carrier is introducing a dedicated anniversary fleet featuring a distinctive design that blends the airline’s historic identity with a modern aesthetic. A repainted Boeing 787 came first followed by Airbus A320neo and Airbus A350 aircraft. Last week, Lufthansa revealed its latest aircraft in a special centennial design. An Airbus A380 is now sporting an oversized crane motif and it looks so cool.

The newly painted aircraft arrived at Munich Airport (MUC) under flight number LH 9901 after undergoing an extensive repainting process at Shannon Airport (SNN). The aircraft now features a bold blue livery with a 47-meter-long stylized crane as well as the commemorative markings 1926 | 2026 and 100.

A team of 35 specialists worked for 34 days to complete the transformation. More than 4,000 square meters of surface area were painted (this is roughly the size of 16 tennis courts) to bring the XXL crane design to life on the world’s largest passenger aircraft. It’s scheduled to enter regular commercial service this month.

As mentioned above, the Airbus A380 is the fourth Lufthansa aircraft to receive the anniversary treatment. Another Airbus A320neo featuring the oversized crane is expected to arrive in Munich shortly. In the coming weeks, a Boeing 747-8 and an Airbus A350-1000 will also join the commemorative fleet.

Lufthansa 100

In total, Lufthansa plans to operate seven aircraft in special anniversary liveries to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the original Luft Hansa in 1926. The special designs are being applied either during regularly scheduled repainting cycles or (in the case of new aircraft) as part of their initial factory paint process. As a result, Lufthansa says the centennial fleet makeover involves only minimal additional cost during the anniversary year.

Anthony’s Take: I have said it many times, but I’ll say it again. I love custom liveries. They’re fun and are a great way for an airline to stand out. Happy 100th, Lufthansa.
