United Airlines flight UA 2410 departed Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) like any other. The flight was en route to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) when a passenger became erratic, violent, and managed to assault the crew and a fellow passenger. Reportedly he shouted that the flight was a “simulation” as he rampaged through the aircraft.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Jordan Robert Langston, 25, of Ogden, UT, was charged with interference with flight crew members following the December 28th incident. This charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and up to $200,000 in fines. The aircraft diverted to Omaha’s Eppley Field (OMA) where law enforcement were at the gate. The incident reportedly unfolded shortly after takeoff. Langston allegedly stood up, walked towards the front of the aircraft and made his simulation declaration. He then apparently went to the back of the plane and pushed a flight another attendant before stepping on her toes and then pushing her again. Langston was given a warning to sit down, but reportedly paced the aisle.

Flight attendants then called for four “Able Bodied Assistants (ASAs)” to sit with Langston and keep him in check if his behavior got out of control again. Pilots made the call to divert the aircraft and declared a Level 2 threat (this designation indicates that a passenger has physically assaulted a crew member or passenger on the flight).

The shenanigans were apparently not over before landing as 30 minutes later, Langston allegedly jumped out of his seat and started jumping around before striking one of the ASAs in the face as they tried to get him to stay seated. He was taken to the back of the plane and handcuffed when that did not seem to work. The flight eventually continued on to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).

Anthony’s Take: Mental health issues and substance abuse are both serious issues. All signs seem to be pointing to one of these at play. Hopefully, Langston gets the help he needs. It appears that the flight attendants and passenger are thankfully okay.
