Frontier Airlines has announced a new, streamlined boarding process as part of its broader initiative to redefine ultra-low-cost air travel. Effective today, the carrier has expanded its boarding structure from four to seven groups. This change is designed to improve efficiency, reward loyalty, and enhance the customer experience.
New Boarding Groups
The updated boarding process begins with preboarding for customers with disabilities, those needing extra time, active-duty military, FRONTIER Miles Elite Diamond members, and families traveling with children under two. From there, passengers board in seven organized groups based on fare type, loyalty tier, seating, and purchased add-ons. These include:
- Group 1: FRONTIER Miles Elite Platinum and Gold members; customers who purchased Business or Premium Bundles; customers who purchased Board First
- Group 2: FRONTIER Miles members who purchased an Economy Bundle or a carry-on bag
- Group 3: All other customers who purchased an Economy Bundle or carry-on bag
- Group 4: FRONTIER Miles Elite Silver members (who were not eligible for an earlier boarding group); FRONTIER Airlines World Mastercard cardmembers; customers who purchased priority boarding; customers seated in Premium or Exit Row (who were not eligible for an earlier boarding group)
- Group 5: All other FRONTIER Miles members
- Group 6: Basic fare customers seated in rear half of cabin
- Group 7: Basic fare customers seated in front half of cabin
The system prioritizes Frontier’s most loyal travelers and customers who purchase premium options, while still providing an orderly, transparent boarding process for all passengers. This structured approach is expected to minimize congestion and reduce overall boarding times.
The introduction of additional boarding groups is one of several enhancements under The New Frontier, the airline’s transformation initiative. Frontier has recently introduced UpFront Plus seating, offering extra leg room in the first two rows with guaranteed empty middle seats. The airline is also preparing to debut First Class seating in late 2025. Additionally, Frontier has rolled out unlimited companion travel for its most loyal customers, allowing travelers to choose a different companion for each flight.
Bobby Schroeter, Chief Commercial Officer at Frontier Airlines, said:
Flying with Frontier just became an even more seamless experience. Our new boarding groups are designed to reward our most loyal customers and enhance the overall travel experience for everyone.”
Anthony’s Take: Boarding seems to always be a work in progress for all carriers. I can’t count the number of times that the airlines in the United States have tweaked their zones and boarding orders. Let’s hope this works for Frontier.
