United Airlines flight UA 1679 was delayed around four hours on Tuesday due to mechanical issues and then a passenger choosing to get high in the First Class lavatory. One of the pilots was concerned about coming into contact with the smoke and what this could do to him if he were selected for a random drug test. He walked off the flight and caused the rest of the passengers to need to wait for a replacement on the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Cancún International Airport (CUN) flight.

This was originally posted on Reddit and shared by View from the Wing. The pilot reportedly said: “I have 30 years left of my career at United, I’m not willing to risk getting drug tested when I get to Houston.” While the risk of coming into a contact high or the pilot breathing enough to fail a drug test seems a bit ridiculous, I get his stance on not wanting to ruin his career around a selfish passenger’s stupidity. I’m not anti-marijuana and enjoy my edibles, but at home and not while inconveniencing anyone else.

United reportedly provided passengers with $15 meal vouchers to wait out the almost four-hour delay.

Anthony’s Take: Some passengers are just selfish. It’s fine to smoke pot, but don’t do it in a public place and cause others to be delayed. Hopefully, United bans this passenger.

If there were an outdoor smoking areas in airports then the (admittedly stupid) passenger would have presumably smoked out there instead. As an ex-smoker who quit many years ago I think that smoking areas in airports make life better for smokers for obvious reasons and nonsmokers because the person next to you isn’t freaking out after flying in from another continent and connecting to your flight. Germany seems to have a reasonable middle ground but I don’t think smoking The Devil’s Lettuce is allowed.
