Earlier this month, I wrote about Oman Air officially joining the oneworld® alliance. Today is the day that it becomes a member after years from its first mention. The carrier first announced that it was joining the oneworld® alliance back in June 2022. Oman Air, based in Muscat, was sponsored by Qatar Airways. This took some time, but it’s finally happening today.
The carrier teased its announcement on social media yesterday. Oman Air is the 15th member of oneworld®. The alliance officially began on February 1, 1999 with American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas as its founders. It was formed to create a seamless passenger experience and to reward frequent flyers with additional benefits (including some of the most generous lounge access of any of the three alliances).
oneworld® currently includes the following airlines:
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Fiji Airways
- Finnair
- Iberia
- Japan Airlines
- Malaysia Airlines
- Qantas
- Qatar Airways
- Royal Air Maroc
- Royal Jordanian
- SriLankan Airlines
Hawaiian Airlines is expected to become the 16th alliance member in 2026.
Con Korfiatis, CEO of Oman Air, said:
Oman Air is honored to be joining the oneworld® alliance, whose members and global footprint represent the best of what international travelers want to experience. We are thrilled to be able to welcome oneworld customers to the Sultanate of Oman to experience our unique culture, stunning mountain excursions, beautiful beaches, and, above all, the warm hospitality of the Omani people.”
Anthony’s Take: This has been a long time coming and makes sense for both Oman Air and oneworld®. I’m a fan of airline alliances, but will likely never fly them as my travels do not take me to the Middle East.
