Canadian Airline WestJet has been hit with a cybersecurity incident that has disrupted access to several internal systems as well as its mobile app. Flight schedules and operations remain unaffected as the airline rolls into its third day of investigating this breach.
The incident was first confirmed on Friday. WestJet’s internal teams are working with law enforcement and Transport Canada to investigate what happened and to limit further disruptions. The airline has not disclosed what systems were impacted or whether any sensitive customer or employee data has been compromised. The full scope of the incident is unknown and WestJet is implementing additional security measures while urging staff and customers to exercise caution.
WestJet is providing updates every 12 hours (or sooner if new information becomes available). There is no indication yet of who caused the breach. It’s also unknown whether the incident involves ransomware or attempted data theft as no one has claimed responsibility. Thankfully, operations are still normal and WestJet has not had to delay or cancel flights as a result of the attack.
Anthony’s Take: This is not the first Cyberattack an airline has faced. In December, Japan Airlines had a breach and it caused flight delays and cancellations. Thankfully, this one appears to only be impacting some systems and not overall operations.
