Beginning July 1st, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines passengers will be able to add long-haul segments on ITA Airways to a single ticket. This is another step closer to ITA Airways’ full integration into the Lufthansa Group and eventual joining of Star Alliance next year.

Long-haul codeshare flights will be available for purchase starting on July 1st. Passengers will soon be able to travel with Lufthansa from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich International Airport (MUC) to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) with onward ITA Airways’ flights to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED), Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (RUH), and more. Brussels Airlines will offer trips from Brussels Airport (BRU) to Cairo International Airport (CAI). Another example is Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines offering flights from Vienna Airport (VIE) via Rome to Rio de Janeiro/Galeão-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG) or São Paulo/Guarulhos-Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU). Any of these itineraries will provide customers significantly better connections and easier baggage handling. More codeshare flights to Africa and Asia will be added in the near future.

ITA Airways

Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group, said:

We are delighted to reach the next milestone in the integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group. By expanding our codeshare flights – now also for long-haul connections – we are offering our airlines’ guests a seamless and consistent travel experience more than ever before. They benefit from an expanded and perfectly coordinated route network across all our airlines and hubs – and only need one booking and one check-in. In addition, customers can earn and redeem miles and points in their respective frequent flyer programs as usual. This makes traveling even easier, more comfortable, and more attractive for our customers.”

Since March, passengers of ITA Airways and the other Lufthansa Group airlines have been able to book more than 100 new codeshare flights on domestic Italian and European flights. Members of the Miles & More or Volare loyalty programs can also earn and redeem miles and points on codeshare flights. Once this codeshare program has been fully implemented, ITA Airways passengers will have a choice of over 250 Lufthansa Group codeshare destinations.

Anthony’s Take: I can’t wait for ITA Airways to become fully integrated and to be able to earn and redeem miles for these flights through United or other Star Alliance airlines. This is another milestone and it shows how committed the Lufthansa Group is to adding its newest airline into the fold.
