Last week, I wrote about Delta Air Lines and Korean Air taking a combined 25% stake in WestJet. The SkyTeam partners already have agreements with the Canadian airline and will bring it further into the fold. Today, WestJet announced that it’s also strengthening its codeshare agreements with Air France and KLM.

The new codeshare agreement will add 14 destinations from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) and more than 50 destinations through Air France’s Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) hub. WestJet will begin flights between Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) starting on May 29th. The codeshare agreement opens up lots of other European cities. Guests traveling on WestJet codeshare flights with Air France and KLM will enjoy the convenience of booking an entire trip on one ticket.

Jared Mikoch-Gerke, WestJet Director of Airport Affairs and Alliances, said:

As part of our commitment to flying Canadians where they want to go, these expanded partnerships provide WestJet guests with more options to explore 59 sought-after European destinations this summer. With WestJet’s recent transatlantic network expansions, guests traveling from across the country will benefit from more choice and convenience when travelling through Paris and Amsterdam. For guests originating in, or connecting through Atlantic Canada in particular, these enhancements are a gamechanger – offering guests traveling from or through Halifax and St. John’s more destinations, fewer layovers and convenient access to Europe.”

This all seems to be leading to WestJet eventually joining SkyTeam. It makes sense given its partners and Air Canada’s founding member status with rival Star Alliance.

Anthony’s Take: WestJet, Air France, and KLM will offer codeshares on more flights to make travel more seamless. This seems like another step in WestJet’s march to being a member of SkyTeam.
