SAS has seen a lot of change over the past year. The founding member of Star Alliance made the jump to SkyTeam and since then has been cozying up with fellow members like Delta, Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic. Today, the Scandinavian carrier announced that it is bringing Business Class back to its intra-Europe flights on October 1st. While this might not seem like much to get excited about, it means that I will once again fly the airline when connecting in or traveling around Europe.
Intra-Europe Business Class was yanked from SAS aircraft back in 2013. It was replaced with what the airline called “SAS Plus.” With Business Class gone, the curtains dividing the cabin came down, meals were downgraded, and SAS stopped selling the true premium offering (although a blocked middle seat is hardly anything to get excited about).
When SAS brings back Business Class, passengers can expect the following:
- A new dining concept with a more premium and flexible experience that includes reusable premium tableware.
- A section in the front of the aircraft for Business Class with a curtain and overhead divider.
- Blocked middle seats
- Priority check-in, boarding, and access to more lounges.
Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, said:
Many of our comfort- and quality-focused travelers expect a clearly defined European Business Class that aligns with international standards. While SAS Plus has provided an upgraded experience, it has lacked the recognition and clarity that travelers seek. With the reintroduction of European Business Class, we are ensuring that SAS offers the premium experience of a top European airline.”
With these changes, SAS will align better with Air France and KLM’s intra-Europe Business Class offering. The airline wants to join a joint venture and needs to have a product that is competitive for travelers. I’m happy to see the return as I always enjoyed the meals and service on SAS, but shied away when it stopped offering true Business Class (I do not check bags and am always leery when I can’t book Business because of a fear that a gate agent may attempt to make me check my bag as Economy usually has a lower allowance).
Anthony’s Take: I look forward to SAS once again offering Business Class on intra-Europe flights. It makes the airline more competitive and is a welcome addition for European travelers.
