South Africa saw quite an increase in service from both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines over the past few years. Both carriers fly to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) and Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). South African Airways ceased flying to/from the United States and this gap opened an opportunity for both carriers. Now, it looks like they’re shuffling the schedule a bit due to changes in demand.

Delta Air Lines is looking to increase its flights between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) from 3x to 5x weekly. To accommodate this change, it wants to cut service to Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) from 1x daily to 5x weekly.

United Airlines is looking at similar shifts. It would like to increase flights between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) from 3x to 4x weekly. This change would also see one less weekly flight to/from Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) with that route dropping from 1x daily to 6x weekly. United is also looking for permission to fly between the two airports in South Africa on a Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) offering.

The Chicago-based carrier also flies between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT). This will continue to be offered 3x weekly.

Anthony’s Take: We were supposed to fly to South Africa a few years ago, but concerns around Covid kept us in the United States. I still want to go and explore Cape Town, Johannesburg, and some of the rest of South Africa one of these days.
