Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2 8243 was flying from Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) to Grozny Airport (GRZ) in Russia’s Chechnya. The 301-mile flight was forced to divert to Aqtau International Airport (SCO) due to bad weather, but crashed during landing.

The Embraer E190 aircraft was carrying 62 passengers and five crew members. Reuters reports that 38 people have been confirmed dead with many others injured. The aircraft attempted to land and missed the runway, which caused it to break apart and catch fire.

Initial reports suggest that a bird strike might have caused the crash. Others are speculating that GPS jamming or Russian air defenses accidentally shot it down.

One passenger sent video to his wife from inside the aircraft when he realized something was wrong. Investigations are obviously ongoing to determine the exact cause of this tragedy.

Anthony’s Take: What sad news on Christmas. My condolences to all who lost loved ones and wishes for quick healing to the survivors.
