Back in August, I wrote about Hong Kong Airlines looking to resume its longhaul service. Today, it announced that it is restarting flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in January.
Hong Kong Airlines celebrated its 18th anniversary this month and will resume this route on January 18th. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) originally launched in June 2017 and ended in 2022 when the company went through a $6.2 billion debt restructuring. This nearly made the company go bankrupt and forced it to sell off most of the 53 planes that were in its fleet.
Hong Kong Airlines Chairman, Mr. Yan Bo, said:
We are thrilled to welcome Vancouver back as Hong Kong Airlines’ first North American destination. We aim to attract more travelers to experience Vancouver’s beauty, facilitating family reunions and business collaborations. The route will further strengthen our Asian network and offer global passengers more diverse and convenient travel options, connecting Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, Oceania, and North America.”
The flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will operate 2x weekly with Airbus A330 aircraft on Tuesdays and Saturdays outbound and Wednesdays and Sundays for the return flights.
The airline currently flies to 25 destinations across Asia and the Pacific. It’s looking to add service to four North American routes with two in the United States. These will include:
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
- Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
- Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) will be new destinations for Hong Kong Airlines, while the other two are resumptions. Hong Kong Airlines also used to fly to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
Anthony’s Take: Hong Kong Airlines has a tough road ahead going against Cathay Pacific on these routes. We’ll see how Vancouver fares and if the others are launched. I love Hong Kong and hope to visit again next year.
