Boeing Plans To Lay Off 2,500 US Employees

Aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, announced today that it is cutting 2,500 jobs in Washington, Oregon, South Carolina, and Missouri as it tries to regain its financial footing. Around 2,200 layoff notices were sent to workers in Washington and another 220 in South Carolina. These are the two states where Boeing builds its commercial aircraft.

Reuters reports that Boeing began telling employees last week that they will be paid until January 17th in order to comply with federal requirements that mandate that employees be given at least 60 days notice prior to terminating their employment. These Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications (WARN) have been expected with another round of layoffs likely coming next month. Employees that are being laid off range from engineers to production workers.

This all comes on the tails of weeks of striking by machinists that were working on the production of Boeing’s 737 MAX aircraft. Tthe International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union agreed to accept Boeing’s latest offer in a vote that was held on November 4th and passed with 59% of the union voting for it. More than 33,000 machinists sought pay increases, enhanced retirement benefits, improved healthcare, and a better work-life balance. Boeing had come to the table several times prior and finally reached a settlement to get machinists back to producing its 737 MAX aircraft production going.

Anthony’s Take: Boeing has had a bad year right from the start with the incident on the Alaska Airlines flight. The machinists strike, delays, and other conditions have created the current situation for the aircraft manufacturer. It’s sad to see layoffs but there doesn’t appear to be any other way to cut costs.
