Spirit Airlines is continuing to tweak its route map. The low-cost carrier has dropped quite a few routes over the past few months. In September, I wrote about Spirit cutting 14 routes and then slashing 18 more in October. Now, 24 more routes are being discontinued.
The routes being cut are all over the map with multiple flights being cancelled from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Spirit seems to be pulling back the most out of American Airlines hubs.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
Passengers flying/to from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will see the following routes cut:
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) (ends on January 8th)
- Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (ends on December 3rd)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (ends on January 8th)
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) passengers will see four routes get the axe. These include:
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ends on November 6th)
- Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (ends on December 3rd)
- San Antonio International Airport (SAT) (ended already)
- Tampa International Airport (TPA) (ends on December 2nd)
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
Spirit’s Florida hub will see three flights removed. These include:
- Managua’s Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) (ends on February 11th)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) (ended already)
- El Salvador International Airport Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez (SAL) (ends on February 10th)
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Flyers to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will see these cuts:
- John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) (ends on January 8th)
- San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) (ended already)
- Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) (ended already)
- Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) (ends on March 4th)
- San Antonio International Airport (SAT) (ends on March 3rd)
Other Routes Cut
These 10 routes are also being removed from the map:
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to/from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) (ends on January 8th)
- Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) to/from Orlando International Airport (MCO) (ended already)
- Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) to/from Sacramento International Airport (SMF) (ended already)

A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines shared this statement:
We routinely evaluate our network and make adjustments to support the company’s business strategy based on current market and operating conditions. As part of this process, we updated our upcoming schedule to focus on our strongest-performing routes.”
Anthony’s Take: Spirit is trying to juggle its financial issues with an aircraft shortage. We’ll see what other cuts come as it continues to look at a merger with Frontier Airlines.
