United Airlines flight UA2246 from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) saw in-flight violence when a passenger began randomly attacking and punching another sleeping passenger. The incident was random as the man was simply sleeping when he was sucker punched and bloodied.
Everett Chad Nelson, 44, got up from his seat in the rear of the aircraft around two hours into the five hour flight. He walked forward to the lavatory in the front of the plane. Upon returning to his seat, he randomly attacked a man seated in 12F (this is a window seat, so I guess the other two seats were vacant on this rededye flight). The Independent reports that “without notice, began physically attacking a sleeping male passenger by punching him repeatedly in the face and head until blood was drawn.” Another passenger intervened and pulled Nelson off of him, but not until after the other passenger was bleeding.
The unidentified passenger suffered two black eyes and a gash on the man’s nose was opened. Blood splattered on his seat, the wall, the window, and the sleeves of Nelson’s green windbreaker. The complaint provides no motive and does not say the two knew each other. This is scary because it was so random.
Nelson was moved to the front of the plane by flight attendants where another passenger kept him contained. A United spokesperson released the following statement about Monday night’s incident:
Thanks to the quick action of our crew and customers, one passenger was restrained after becoming physically aggressive toward another customer on a flight from San Francisco to Washington Dulles on Monday. The flight landed safely and was met by paramedics and local law enforcement.”
Nelson was arrested upon landing and was due to appear at a detention hearing yesterday. He is charged with one count of assault by beating, striking, and wounding in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. If convicted, Nelson faces a year in prison.
Anthony’s Take: What a bizarre thing to happen on a flight. It’s unknown if the two had words in the airport, but this does not appear to be the case. You never know what will set someone off and the attacker from Florida is certainly embodying the “Florida Man” moniker.

Nice job inciting hatred by labeling him as his state of residence.
Someone did a prank call to the guy that got beat. Pretending to be from united airlines.
