A few weeks ago, I wrote about how SkyTeam was adding its first non-airline partner. Eurostar will join the alliance and offer integrated intermodal trips via air and rail for millions of passengers. Now, Italy’s leading rail operator, Trenitalia, is also set to join SkyTeam.

Trenitalia’s high-speed rail network in Italy will make intermodal travel across the country simple by combining air and rail itineraries in a single reservation. With Trenitalia added, passengers will be able to book a journey that connects air and rail segments. A customer will soon be able to fly from New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and then continue onto a Frecciarossa train.

Patrick Roux, SkyTeam’s CEO, said:

We are delighted to join forces with Trenitalia as our second non-airline partner, strengthening SkyTeam’s intermodal travel strategy by offering more high-quality, high-speed rail connections – supporting our mission to future-proof travel. Italy is an important global market for business and leisure travelers and with Trenitalia customers will have more choice and flexibility to go where they want to, how they want to, while enjoying the many benefits for which SkyTeam is known.”

Once the partnership begins, passengers will be able to earn and redeem miles with on eligible Frecciarossa rail itineraries and members of CartaFRECCIA, the loyalty program of Trenitalia’s high-speed train network with the SkyTeam airline’s frequent flyer program that they are participating in. For example, A Delta SkyMiles member will be able to earn and redeem those miles for train travel.

Currently, 14 SkyTeam member airlines serve Italy from Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Greater China. SkyTeam’s partnership with Trenitalia furthers the alliance’s commitment to make the customer journey more seamless and to provide more travel options for members.

Anthony’s Take: This is great news and a good way to be protected when flying on one air-and-rail itinerary. With Eurostar and Trenitalia, passengers will have lots of rail choices for connections to smaller cities. Star Alliance began the trend with its 2022 partnership with Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Germany. We’ll see if other non-airline partners join in the future. I wonder what SkyTeam benefits elite members will receive on Trenitalia.
