Avelo Airlines has cut six cities from its route network in its newly announced winter schedule. These routes were largely seasonal, but they will not be brought back according to this latest update.
The low-cost carrier launched in 2021 and operates a fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft. It serves destinations across the United States and competes with Spirit Airways, Breeze Airways, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines. Avelo recently celebrated its third birthday and has been aggressively tweaking its route network, adding new destinations, cutting some, and it opened its sixth aircraft base last month. Avelo will discontinue service to the following locations:
- Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) (ends on August 31st)
- Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA) (ends on August 31st)
- Dubuque Regional Airport (DBQ) (winter seasonal service pulled)
- Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) (ends on August 18th)
- Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO) (winter seasonal service pulled)
- Lansing Airport (LAN) (winter seasonal service pulled)
The low-cost carrier released the following statement today:
Every route Avelo flies must be profitable or be on a trend line towards that goal. In most cases, the routes we enter succeed and we continue service. However, with those that do not – like these six — we must make the difficult decision to exit the route and better utilize our resources in high-growth opportunities elsewhere in our network.”
All of these cities were served by flights originating in Orlando International Airport (MCO). Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) also saw flights from Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR).
Anthony’s Take: All airlines constantly evaluate the profitability of routes. These are added and cut accordingly. With these changes, I expect some new routes to be announced in the near term.
