Tulum’s new airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO), is opening to foreign carriers on March 28th. With this new airport, carriers have been busy adding service to take advantage of demand for Tulum travel. The city, located on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, is known for its beaches and preserved Mayan ruins. The coastal area also offers mangroves and cenotes (natural limestone sinkholes) for visitors to explore. American, Delta, JetBlue, and United Airlines all have flights planned for the new airport. Spirit Airlines was also going to fly there, but recently announced that these plans were postponed due to defects found in some of the engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney in its Airbus A321neo aircraft (more here). Now, the first European carrier has added service to the Mexican beach destination.
Discover Airlines (the rebranded Eurowings Discover, which is part of the Lufthansa Group) will begin flying between Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) and Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) on December 12th. The route will run 2x weekly on an Airbus A330-300 with 27 Business Class, 31 Premium Economy, and 252 Economy Class seats.
This is the second destination in Mexico that Discover Airlines will serve. It currently flies to Tulum’s neighbor, Cancún International Airport (CUN). The German leisure airline was founded in 2021 as Eurowings Discover and serves 62 destinations with its fleet of 24 aircraft.
Anthony’s Take: The US carriers have flocked to this airport with lots of flights planned. I wonder if we’ll see any other European carriers add service in the near term. The route seems like one that Condor or Air France could pick up.
