WestJet has been planning its winter schedule. Last week, I wrote about the Canadian airline adding multiple flights to the Caribbean and Latin America. While it will operate 305 total routes and serve 62 Latin American, Caribbean, and US sun destinations this winter, it’s closely watching the US routes and some of them are getting the axe.
Back in March, WestJet had plans to add 3x weekly flights between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). These were supposed to start on May 11th, but WestJet cancelled the route before it started due to demand cratering. This week, it updated its schedules and three more routes are being dropped. These include:
- Ottawa/Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) to/from Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
- Victoria International Airport (YYJ) to/from Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)
- Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Additionally, WestJet will suspend its flights between Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) and Orlando International Airport (MCO). These cancellations and this suspension illustrate that demand is down and that WestJet can do better offering more flights to the Caribbean and Latin America than the US in the current political climate.
Anthony’s Take: I wonder how many more routes we’ll see dropped as we get closer to the winter and if prices will come down any due to such soft demand.
