Western Air was founded in 2000 and is based in The Bahamas and offers daily flights throughout the islands and South Florida. The carrier announced today that it is adding flights between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Freeport’s Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO). This will be the second US route for Western Air as it also flies to/from Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS).
The new route kicks off on August 22nd. Western Air operates a fleet of single-class Embraer EJ145 LR and XR aircraft. These super-short flights last approximately 25 minutes. Grand Bahama is the northernmost island in The Bahamas. It boasts beautiful beaches, restaurants, and lots of activities.
Flights departing from Freeport’s Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO) will operate from Western Air’s private passenger terminal. This space was newly reconstructed and reopened one year ago after significant damage from Hurricane Dorian in 2019.
Anthony’s Take: I had never heard of Western Air, but it provides a second option for those looking to fly between Florida and The Bahamas. Bahamasair and Silver Airways have been flying this route for some time and this will give it some competition and help with pricing.

Your beloved Silver Airways is also on the FLL-FPO route. Then you have AA from MIA. And let’s not forget the ferry from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama, either. So the market is getting crowded, which should be good for fares.
LOl. My beloved 🙂 I’m a little sour about them now. Thanks for the info. I added Silver Airways to the article.
My pleasure. Love the blog.
Appreciate it!
