On Sunday, I wrote about Delta Air Lines flight DL 2809 arriving at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on Saturday night from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP). The Boeing 757-300 arrived 10 minutes late and was quickly met by law enforcement officials from Homeland Security, local investigators from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, and others identified as air marshals. A bit more information has now been released and the pilot that was arrested has been identified and charged.

Delta Pilot SFO

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department had been investigating 34-year-old Rustom Bhagwagar of Florida for some time on reports of “sex crimes against a child.” They boarded the aircraft and removed the pilot in handcuffs. He is now in custody on “five counts of oral copulation with a child under 10 years of age”and is being held on $5 million bail. Bhagwagar allegedly sexually abused a female child while he was dating her mother. This occurred between the ages of six and eleven. The girl further alleged that her mother knew about the abuse and was event present for some of the sexual acts (according to local news station, Fox KTVU).

The other pilot had no idea what was happening and that is why he looks so surprised in the video above. Delta released the following statement:

Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful conduct and will fully cooperate with law enforcement. We are appalled by reports of the charges related to the arrest and the individual in question has been suspended pending an investigation.”

Anthony’s Take: This is disgusting. I’m not sure that the pilot needed to have 10 people rush the cockpit, but it’s good that they were able to make the arrest and now the courts can handle the rest.
