United’s international Business Class is called Polaris®. The carrier introduced the rebranding in 2016 along with new, luxe lounges. The Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) location was the first to open. With United’s international growth (both in destinations and seat capacity), a larger lounge is needed to accommodate all of the eligible passengers. Anyone who has visited and felt crowded will be excited to see that renovations and an expansion that will add over 50% more space are on the way.

The Points Guy is reporting that the Polaris Lounge will undergo some major changes, including:

  • It will be expanded from 16,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet (more than 50% more space).
  • The number of seats will double.
  • There will also be more restrooms and workspaces.

Renovations are scheduled to begin on September 3rd. United will close part of the lounge for expansion, but none of the current amenities like shower suites, a sit-down restaurant, a bar, and a buffet will close during this time. Phase two will see the entire lounge close at some point next year for refurbishment of the existing space. It will reopen in the spring of 2025 (just ahead of the busiest travel season of the year).

Polaris® guests will be accommodated with premium beverages during construction at the United Clubs℠ throughout Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). United operates four of these lounges there. No word around upgraded food and I’d guess that it will just be the beverages.

Anthony’s Take: The Polaris® Lounge at O’Hare was the first one and it desperately needs more space and some sprucing up. It will be interesting to see how the construction schedule goes and if United shrinks the size of the United Club℠ in Concourse C to bring this additional space to the lounge.
