Yesterday, I wrote about American Airlines adding a bunch of new routes from its hubs around the country. Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) saw Erie International Airport Tom Ridge Field (ERI), Lincoln Airport (LNK), and Tennessee’s Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) added to the map. Now, United is firing back and copied the additions exactly.

United will resume service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Erie International Airport Tom Ridge Field (ERI) on June 1st.  This will mark a return to this Pennsylvania city that has not been served since May 2023. It will also begin flying to Tennessee’s Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) for the first time on June 8th.

United Express

American added flights to Lincoln Airport (LNK) from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). United currently flies to the Nebraska airport from Chicago, but it will bump service up to 5x daily to dominate the market.

The Points Guy shared that Mark Weithofer, United’s Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning, said:

As we continue our steady growth at O’Hare, reaching nearly 650 daily departures during peak summer travel, we’re building on the strength of a global network that’s simply unmatched in Chicago.”

Anthony’s Take: United’s CEO has made it clear that he feels that Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is not big enough for both American and United to have hubs there and he’s not backing down. I have my popcorn for what will come next in this turf war.
