United Airlines announced the opening of its newest seasonal hub at the North Pole (JOY) today. This destination will be served from 13 global cities and is just one part of the Fantasy Flights that United has been providing to deserving children and their families this holiday season.
United’s Fantasy Flights are special experiences for some children and their families to board United aircraft and head for Santa’s hometown. United is partnering with local nonprofits and hospitals in each city as well as Make-A-Wish® in some cities to help identify children who need a little extra cheer this holiday season. Those selected take a short trip, either in the air or on the ground, and arrive at the North Pole. United airport employees and local volunteers transform an average airport gate or maintenance hangar into holiday wonderlands for these kids and their parents.
Once at their destination, guests are provided with food, activities, and interaction with Santa and his elves. Fantasy Flight departures will take place from 13 airports beginning tomorrow. These include:
- Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) (December 10th)
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) (December 7th)
- Denver International Airport (DEN) (December 14th)
- Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) (December 10th)
- Guam’s Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport (GUM) (December 13th)
- Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) (December 5th)
- Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (December 7th)
- London Heathrow Airport (LHR) (December 7th)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (December 7th)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) (December 14th)
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO) (December 7th)
- Tokyo (not specified Haneda or Narita) (December 8th)
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) (December 7th)
United Express operated airports across the system will also host Fantasy Flights.
United’s Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Labor Relations, Kate Gebo, said:
The team made a list, I checked it twice and the answer was clear – with so many deserving children on the nice list this year, it only made sense to launch a seasonal hub in the North Pole. We’ve stocked up on de-icing fluid to fly from even more cities. United is honored to uplift children and their families through the joy of the holiday season. Making the North Pole closer than ever is one of the many ways we can show support for the communities where we live, work and fly.”
Anthony’s Take: United has been doing Fantasy Flights for children for many years. It’s a great tradition where the carrier gives back, employees volunteer to make these days special, and the holiday spirit is felt throughout.
