United Airlines has the best route network of any US carrier for travel to Europe. It has added tons of smaller markets over the past few years and increased capacity and frequency on key routes. United has flown to Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) for several years. It will add a second daily flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) starting on May 23rd along with flights to three other Portuguese destinations.
Portugal is a fun and tasty country to explore. We have been to Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve many times and keep finding ourselves back there for the culture, food, and natural beauty. It’s also inexpensive compared to a lot of the rest of Western Europe. My top picks for Lisbon and Porto can be found here and here.
This summer, United will fly the following routes to Portugal:
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from Faro International Airport (FAO) (4x weekly; runs between May 24th and September 23rd)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) (1x daily; year round; this is in addition to flights run by TAP Portugal)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from Ponta Delgada’s Aeroporto João Paulo II (PDL) in the Azores (1x daily; run from June 7th to September 24th)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) (2x daily; run between April 5th and October 25th. This is in addition to flights run by TAP Portugal)
- Washington Dulles International Airport to/from Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) (1x daily; year round; this is in addition to flights run by TAP Portugal)
All United flights (with the exception of EWR to LIS) are on Boeing 757-200 aircraft. These are former Continental planes with 16 Polaris, 42 Economy Plus, and 118 Economy Class seats. The Boeing 787-10 offers 44 Polaris, 21 Premium Plus, 54 Economy Plus, and 199 Economy Class seats
Star Alliance Partner, TAP Portugal, flies to/from Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) and Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) and:
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
- Miami International Airport (MIA)
- New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
Service to Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) runs only to/from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
Anthony’s Take: It’s great to see that demand for travel to Portugal continues to grow. If you’re looking for a great summer trip, I highly recommend Portugal. Make sure to have some Pastel de nata and Porto.
