I have written a lot about TSA PreCheck® and the literal days worth of time that it has saved me. My laptops stay in my bag, my shoes stay on, and I can breeze through a metal detector. I have been part of the program since it launched in December 2013 and will continue to do so for the convenience it brings. The secret has long been out and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) just reached a milestone with 20 million members enrolled.
This latest announcement brings the total number of vetted airline passengers for DHS Trusted Traveler programs (including the US Customs and Border Protection’s Global Entry) to over 40 million. TSA PreCheck® is available at more than 200 airports. The agency’s benchmark for TSA PreCheck® lanes is a screening time of under 10 minutes (I’ve been through as quickly as 30 seconds when traveling at smaller airports and at off times).
TSA Administrator, David Pekoske, said:
More travelers than ever are using TSA PreCheck® because of its value, ease and efficiency. TSA PreCheck® continues to be one of our most innovative risk-based security solutions, providing the benefit of shorter wait times of under 10 minutes, greater checkpoint efficiency and improved security. Additionally, the cost of TSA PreCheck® continues to go down for both new enrollments and renewals. The consistent growth of the TSA PreCheck® program is a testament to its popularity and success.”
TSA PreCheck members are able to wear their shoes, belts, and light jackets through screening. They may keep their laptops and 3-1-1 liquids in their carry-on bags. Enrolling or renewing in TSA PreCheck® is easy:
- Step 1: Visit tsa.gov/precheck to begin your enrollment and choose one of TSA’s authorized enrollment providers. Pricing starts at $77.95 for a five-year membership.
- Step 2: Submit the online application.
- Step 3: For new enrollees, visit a nearby enrollment location to complete enrollment in 10 minutes with your chosen provider. This process includes fingerprinting, document and photo capture, and payment. Once approved, most enrollees will receive a unique Known Traveler Number (KTN) within three to five days. This must be added to airline reservations to make them TSA PreCheck® eligible. The TSA PreCheck® indicator (such as TSA PRECHK or TSA Pre✓®) must be on a boarding pass to use TSA PreCheck® screening lanes.
Anthony’s Take: I’m a huge fan of TSA PreCheck® (and a bit lesser pleased with CLEAR). The service saves time, costs little, and makes traveling more pleasant. Just don’t tell anyone else as 20 million is a lot of people.
