I’ve made my way through all of the current lunch/dinner options in United Airlines’ First Class cabin. While I preordered the Mezzi Rigatoni (I’ve reviewed it here in the past), I wanted something different. It’s been a while since I browsed the Bistro on Board menu for the Economy Cabin. I noticed that it had a Chicken Parmesan Sandwich while flying to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) today. Aside from the spelling of “Parmesan” (which made me cringe a bit), I was intrigued to try it and decided to give it a try.
The flight attendant was nice enough to bring me the meal I preordered along with the sandwich. The Mezzi Rigatoni had more sauce than in the past and I enjoyed the flavor. I ended up eating the pasta, but not the brown roll, salad, or Magnolia Bakery Red Velvet Banana Pudding.
The Chicken Parmesan Sandwich has about 35 ingredients too many and is pretty loaded with preservatives and additives. It comes wrapped in paper and was a little stuck to said wrapper. That said, it was quite tasty and I used my bread plate for it. The ciabatta roll was nice and crisp without being overly dried out. The chicken patty, while processed also had a good flavor and texture. I ate part of the roll and ended up taking the chicken out of the sandwich, cutting it up, and adding it to my pasta. Nothing like a little Top Chef challenge in the sky.
The Chicken Parmesan Sandwich is described as an “Italian breaded chicken cutlet with marinara sauce, provolone, fontina cheese, and garlic aioli in a crispy ciabatta roll.” It normally costs $11 or 1,300 miles (or free for United 1K® and Global Services® members seated in Economy Class).
Anthony’s Take: Can I make a better Chicken Parm? Sure. Can I make one at 35,000 feet? Nope. United gets credit for this sandwich as it was tasty and something I would eat again when I’m sick of the same meal rotation.
