SWISS took to social media today to mourn one of its colleagues who passed away one week after being on an aircraft that was forced to divert due to smoke in the cockpit and cabin. SWISS flight LX1855 from Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) to Zurich Airport (ZRH) ended up landing at Graz Airport (GRZ).

The incident occurred on December 23rd. There were 74 passengers and 5 crewmembers on the flight. Upon landing, 12 passengers and four of the crew needed medical attention. One, identified only as a young male flight attendant, was taken hospital via helicopter. Sadly, he passed away today. It’s unknown what caused the Airbus A220-300 to fill with smoke, but the Pratt & Whitney engines on the Airbus A220 are suspected. Reportedly, he was rushing around the cabin assisting passengers in putting on their oxygen masks. While he was wearing a smoke hood, it did not work properly to prevent smoke inhalation. SWISS sent an alternate aircraft and accommodated passengers on December 24th. An investigation is ongoing.

Anthony’s Take: The exact cause of death has not been released, but I send my condolences to this young man’s family and friends.
